Semantic Web Technologies for Indoor Environmental Quality: A Review and Ontology Design

Indoor environmental quality (IEQ) affects occupants’ satisfaction, health, productivity, comfort, and well-being. IoT developments enable better monitoring of IEQ parameters; however, integrating the various types heterogeneous data from both BIM domains is cumbersome capital intensive, therefore, limits potential smart buildings. Semantic web technologies can reduce heterogeneity issues, which necessary to facilitate complex models. An ontology related a building’s topology its static dynamic properties still lacking. The outline this research twofold. First, systematic literature review was conducted find state-of-the-art semantic building topology, properties, domains. By graphically reviewing ontologies, their valuable patterns, commonalities, best practices were revealed. Secondly, those results used develop new that integrates topological information with properties. This Building Performance Ontology (BOP) provides generic upper-level description two lower-level ontologies representing observations actuation. in intuitive queries horizontally vertically extensible. Multiple levels detail are introduced ensure practical applicability efficient patterns based on modeler’s needs. BOP opens up range opportunities domain.
